Environmental racism meets MTV. Or at least when they used to play music videos.IT could happen to you. This video is a class project for clinical community psychology Psy.D. students at the University of La Verne, CA. Our assignment was to create an advocacy video that would promote social justice. The cause we chose was environmental racism. Our intent was to create a humorous video that would gain viewers but not undermine the seriousness of environmental racism. We believe that individuals need to be aware that an issue exists before they can participate in advocacy and social change. What is environmental racism? The intentional or unintentional racial discrimination in the enforcement of environmental rules/regulations. The intentional or unintentional targeting of minority communities for the location of polluting industries. The exclusion of minority groups from public and private boards, commissions, and regulatory bodies Race/ethnicity is a better predictor of hazardous waste sites than wealth isThe U.S. not only dumps waste in its own minority communities, it ships it's waste off to other countries as well.Directed by Ian Carpenter Music & Lyrics by Ashley Douroux & Ian Carpenter

Diversity and the Environmental Movement

Complete video at: Death_of_Environmentalism" Death_of_Environmentalism" www.fora.tv
Author and activist Ted Nordhaus addresses issues in diversity and the environmental justice movement. From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility with discussants Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus. Adam Werbach moderates the discussion.
In October 2004, Shellenberger and Nordhaus argued that environmentalism was incapable of dealing with global warming and must die for a new ecological politics to be born. Now, they will make their case for a new "politics of possibility" to replace the old "politics of limits" - from environmentalism to liberalism to conservatism - grounded in changing social values and an expansive new vision of the future - Commonwealth Club of California. Ted Nordhaus is an author, researcher, and political strategist. He is co-author of Break Through and The Death of Environmentalism.

Grand Prize Winner of the 2009 "Protect Our Wetlands, Protect Ourselves" enviro video competition: The Human Cost of Louisiana's environmental catastrophe can be charted not through the annual loss of a 25 square miles of landmass but by the outward migration of the very people who have made it their home for centuries. Native American fishermen have been shunned by an ever harsher lifestyle and are now face extinction. With $50B the entire lower Mississippi river basin can be repaired. We have less than ten years left to tackle this crisis. Please support restoring America's vanishing wetlands. Write your congressmen.

For FIFTY YEARS scientists have known about global warming. This exerpt is from the well known educational documentary "Unchained Goddess" produced by Frank Capra for Bell Labs for their television program "The Bell Telephone Hour." It was so well made, that it went on to live a continued life in middle school science classrooms across the nation for decades. Nearly half a century before Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth," this film was made. But what does it reveal? That our scientists have known for over two generations about this danger, but our politicians and citizenry have chosen to ignore the dangerous implications of this fact until it really is too late to avoid the preventable consequences. Perhaps we deserve our fate.

The Most Terrifying Video You'll Ever See

It's called The Most Terrifying Video You'll Ever See, and it's taking the web by storm. Essentially, it's little more than a high school science teacher named Greg Craven, set up in his home with a whiteboard and a felt-tipped marker.
But he's made the case to over 4 million viewers on multiple websites that An Inconvenient Truth simply didn't go far enough. And that's impressive. Particularly when you consider the fact that he's done it without the aid of anything more high tech than his YouTube account.

To pull it off took him months of living on take-out and energy drinks while his wife and two daughters moved out for weeks at a time as he filmed away back at home, working hard on his 44-part series. Not surprisingly, all the hard-livin' took it's toll, ending him up in the emergency room with chest pains as a result of it.
And he's found his share of critics among the ostrich-crowd as well... With almost 7000 negative comments in return for his efforts. All of which, it seems, served to help him refine what he had to say as he patched the holes in his original video with a follow-up called "How It All Ends".
As Craven himself puts it,
This is not just another environmental issue. This may eat our lunch. This is fundamentally different because in a complex system like the climate, there may be tipping points where irreversible damage is done, but you don't see it until it's too late to do something about it. That's what really has motivated me.
Nope, you can't keep a high school teacher down, no matter how hard you try... So give it a look, the clocks tickin'!

Woody Tasch: Slow Money Principles for a Healthy Food System

"The Slow Money Principles are the path to a new, healthy food system. Sign them and be counted!" "I signed the Principles. Hope you do, too. Together, we are building a strong, new voice for the wisdom of bringing our money home to build sustainable communities. Judy Wicks, Chair/co-founder, Business Alliance for Local Living Economies. In order to enhance food security, food safety and food access; improve nutrition and health; promote cultural, ecological and economic diversity; and accelerate the transition from an economy based on extraction and consumption to an economy based on preservation and restoration, we do hereby affirm the following Principles: I. We must bring money back down to earth. II. There is such a thing as money that is too fast, companies that are too big, finance that is too complex. Therefore, we must slow our money down -- not all of it, of course, but enough to matter. III. The 20th Century was the era of Buy Low/Sell High and Wealth Now/Philanthropy Later—what one venture capitalist called “the largest legal accumulation of wealth in history.” The 21st Century will be the era of nurture capital, built around principles of carrying capacity, care of the commons, sense of place and non-violence. IV. We must learn to invest as if food, farms and fertility mattered. We must connect investors to the places where they live, creating vital relationships and new sources of capital for small food enterprises. V. Let us celebrate the new generation of entrepreneurs, consumers and investors who are showing the way from Making A Killing to Making a Living.
VI. Paul Newman said, "I just happen to think that in life we need to be a little like the farmer who puts back into the soil what he takes out." Recognizing the wisdom of these words, let us begin rebuilding our economy from the ground up, asking: What would the world be like if we invested 50% of our assets within 50 miles of where we live?
What if there were a new generation of companies that gave away 50% of their profits?
What if there were 50% more organic matter in our soil 50 years from now? Sign these Principles and be counted as part of the emerging network that's working to improve the health of local food systems and the economy. These Principles are a living document, a beginning, a reflection of the vision that is unfolding in communities around the country.
Thank you. Please Pass The Principles On to your friends. And if you want to do more, consider becoming a member of the Slow Money Alliance. Join folks like George Siemon, CEO of Organic Valley and Jim Cochran, the first organic strawberry grower in California, and Eliot Coleman, one of the nation's top organic farmers, and Joan Gussow, one of the pioneers of nutrition and ecology, working together to build support for this beautiful movement.

Wildlife and environmental conservation and preservation are challenges that touch all of us. This was the focus of John and Yoke DiGiorgio when they first approached the Narrowsburg community leaders in 2001 with the idea to establish EagleFest. Combining entertainment and education for all attending, the award winning Narrowsburg NY "EagleFest" is an event for everyone to be proud of! Successful in bringing local residents and out-of-town visitors of all ages to the day's multi-faceted series of activities, it brings much deserved attention to the natural resources that enrich our lives in the Delaware River Valley region.
Located along the Delaware River in Sullivan County, New York, Narrowsburg has been named the Eagle Capital of New York. This is because, in addition to increasingly more bald eagles that make the Upper Delaware Region their permanent home, eagles from up north migrate here each winter for the open water, abundant food supply and protected habitate.
STAY TUNED: The Delaware Valley Eagle Alliance will be announcing a new series of programs to take place throughout the year with a tentative Spring/Summer 2009 kick off date. Details will be released as they are confirmed.
In its efforts to increase awareness and understanding, and to promote the conservation of our wildlife and the natural environment, the Delaware Valley Eagle Alliance is tireless in its efforts to raise public awareness through diverse publications, educational programs, and events. The Alliance believes that knowledge is the key to changing attitudes toward conservation and our vital natural resources, and its work reflects this. It is committed to these labors because it is rooted in the belief that the preservation and stewardship of our natural world is essential to the continued growth, development and prosperity of all life that exists on Earth.
